Cliffs, Coves, Churches, Caves and Castles

Seems to be a recurring theme, no?

Were nearing the end of our two weeks in the Adriatic Sea (were back to Split Friday and fly home Saturday).

Just when we think we’ve become almost acclimatized to the beauty and splendor we happen again upon something most remarkable.

Yesterday it was on the island of Korkula. After breakfast we set sail from Lumbarda and just around the corner we happened on Franciscan Monastery Badija where we dropped anchor to swim and bask in the beauty.

The monastery was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. After WWII the communist authorities closed down the monastery, church and school. It was returned to its original owners and reopened in 2003.

What is so striking is its setting with Adriatic blue waters, renaissance limestone architecture set in front of the spectacular backdrop of mountains.

Next we sailed by the town of Korkula. Korkula is known as “Littke Dubrovnik” because of its medieval palaces, churches, squares and houses.

The layout and walls of the town were built in the late 13th century and designed to protect it from sea winds.

This morning we discovered the beauty of the west coast of the island of Hvar. This area is rich with vineyards with tiny villages and steep cliffs with caves.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

  1. I love reading your daily posts! Sailing along the Adriatic has been a dream for years and michael and I are vicariously enjoying the adventure! I would only wish you both could live this life on the water forever – at least in spirit and memories. Enjoy these precious moments … much love, Alyce and Michael
